Loans
Library materials can be borrowed by the following user catagories (see OAT Library Rules).
Internal users: staff of INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Trieste, scientific staff associated to INAF and authorized users, i.e.users with formal research and educational collaboration relationship with Observatory's staff members. They can access the library without restrictions on opening hours, duration and number of loans. To borrow library materials, users will fill in the loan-forms of the tray labelled "Schede di prestito da compilare" (loan forms) in the library. The filled-in forms are either to be given to the Library staff or put on the tray labelled "Schede di prestito compilate" (filled-in forms) in the Library staff office. DO NOT FILL IN the forms between books on the shelves. For short loans (24 hours), users are requested to fill in the registers "Daily Loans" both in the Library room or in the Library staff office. There are no restrictions on the duration of loans.
External users: people who are not included in the previous category and are interested in astronomy and related sciences. They can access the library, by appointment, during opening hours (Mon-Fri, 9:00 - 13:00) and must contact the Library staff. External users can borrow a maximum of two items for a total of four volumes. Duration of the loan is one month. Renewals are possible if the material is not needed by other users. Upon request, loans can be extended for periods longer than one month prior to authorization of the Library staff. Loans cannot be renewed if items are needed by other users.
Library staff must have access to borrowed items at any time.
Items are to be returned at the loan expiry date. Otherwise the Library staff will send a recall message for overdue items. Borrowed items must be returned in case of long absence from Trieste.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Document Delivery (DD)
The library provides a document delivery service for books and articles not available in the OAT Library collections, thus fostering exchange and circulation of bibliographic material among libraries with which a relationship based on mutual exchange has been established.
Request from LIBRARIES:
Requests with the bibliographic reference of the item are to be submitted by NILDE (Network Inter-Library Document Exchange), e-mail or fax.
The requesting library is responsaible for the material on loan. The number of individual requests is limited to one item at a time.
Books are delivered throuth registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt. Photocopies will be sent by surface mail or fax (10 pages max.). Digital copies will be sent by NILDE or e-mail.
The service is free of charge on mutual exchange basis and is in compliance with copyright laws.
Requests from USERS:
After carefully checking Library holdings, if the requested material is not available in the Library, requests can be sent preferably by
NILDE (Network Inter-Library Document Exchange) or by e-mail to
library.oats @ inaf.it with the bibliographic references of the item and his/her personal identity data. The Library staff will perform the necessary bibliographic search and submit the request to the identified library supplier.
NILDE offers to the users the possibility to request articles automatically, using
MyNILDE. It allows the user to submit requests for articles, to view the status of the requests until document delivery and to manage his/her onw bibliographical data. Moreover, it allows the users
to set up ADS database (SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System) to submit their requests automatically to the Library and receive articles more quickly.
Photocopying and scanning
Internal user can use a photocopy machine and a scanner to copy documents that cannot be damaged by photocopying. Rare and precious books and items in precarious conditions are excluded from this service. Requests for photocopying/scanning of bibliographic items of the Library can be submitted to the Library staff (10 pages max.). Particular requests will be examined and authorized by the Library staff.
